This word has been around for just over 100 years, and it still pops up here and there, like in this 2003 Australian newspaper article about a dog: “Let's face it, the Pommie with the goo-goo eyes and flippy floppy hair only ever acts as himself, a sort of feckless, loose goose with a few bob.” 11. We’re all familiar with the flip-flop-a favorite exercise of all politicians-but here’s a variation with a little something extra. Here’s another word that turned up in Shakespeare: in Henry IV Part 1, the phrase “ skimble scamble stuffe” refers to nonsense. In Twelfth Night, Shakespeare offered some sound advice: “Endeauour thy selfe to sleepe, and leaue thy vaine bibble babble.” In other words, “Shut up and go to bed.” 9. BIBBLE-BABBLEīibble-babble is basically babble-it can refer to any sort of empty talk and has since the 1500s. The OED records an 1874 example describing an appropriately creaky sound: “On a mild evening, the tree-toads open their brittle-brattle chorus on the edge of the pond.” 8. This onomatopoeic word usually refers to a rattling sound. It can be an adjective as well as a noun, as seen in a 1693 reference to “Gibble gabble Gibbrish.” 7. This word for meaningless babbling is related to gibberish and gab-it’s also meant to imitate the honking of a goose, which rarely resembles thoughtful discourse. An excessive touchdown celebration could be considered a flaunt-a-flaunt display. Resembling words like rub-a-dub and pit-a-pat, this 16th century term was often applied to birds-or people who strutted like birds. Anything fashionable is probably not going to last, which I hope is true of the man-bun. The OED’s oldest example-from 1652-includes the phrase fingle-fangle fashion, which is fitting. A fingle-fangle is either a piece of junk or an idea so whimsical and insubstantial that it’s barely worth discussing. This term is related to newfangled, which conveys a dismissive attitude toward new stuff, suggesting it’s a bunch of bells, whistles, and crapola. EVO-DEVOįirst appearing in a 1997 issue of Science magazine, evo-devo has a more scientific sense than the rest of the list: “Rudolf Raff and other pioneers have joined forces to create a young field called evolutionary developmental biology, or ‘evo-devo.’” So this is technically an abbreviation, but it walks, talks, and looks like a reduplication. This word could also come in handy when making coiffure requests of well-read hairdressers. This word from the 1700s basically means “really damn curly,” so if you ever see someone with next-level curls, consider using curly-murly to describe their 'do. Needless to say, every comment section in the multiverse is full of pribble-prabble. The expression pribbles and prabbles means the same. This word, which has been around since the 1500s, has the same meaning as its root, pribble: some sort of argument or quarrel, especially one that’s petty or insignificant. Though they all sound like fiddle-faddle, they have specific uses that go beyond yada yada and twittle-twattle. Here’s a look at 12 that deserve to be rescued from their mostly forgotten place in lexical history. Sadly, not all reduplicative words, despite their charm, catch on. You may not like mumbo jumbo or jibber-jabber-or when life turns helter skelter-but it’s hard not to like words created by what linguists call reduplication.

Danielle Fernandez, Technical Editor, Bard na nGleann First, let’s look at the exploration side…Įach area you enter usually operates the same way – if there’s someone there then you talk to that person first, find out as much as you can, then proceed to explore the room as you find points of interest, items, and general information about the person or environment. There are two gameplay aspects to the game, the first is walking around and looking for clues, as mentioned above, and the second is retreating to your inner Mindmap and piecing together everything you’ve found so far. You have to multitask on the fly, piecing together clues and evidence between multiple mysteries and cases within your head – it gets so crowded in there, it’s like 50 shades of grey cells! Each chapter introduces a new set of goals and conclusions you’re trying to uncover, gradually leading towards the answer behind everything – which is presented in a Poirot-style informal chat to all the guests where you declare all the evidence and theories you’ve uncovered.Īlthough this game is very different to the previous ABC Murders (also from Microids), the gameplay and mechanics work great and makes the engaging narrative even more immersive and entertaining. That’s right, not only are you now trying to investigate the blackmail and deceit within this small group of friends and family, but you’re also on the lookout for a murderer and their motive for carrying out such a dreadful act. You agree to stay and casually investigate everyone present at the manor, as the victim believed that one of their guests is the suspect, yet things take a turn for the worst when one of the guests turns up dead… You find yourself returning to help out the family you dealt with in the first chapter, only this time it’s regarding threats and blackmail towards the family and individuals. Once you’ve successfully solved this first case, the game shifts forward a few years to when Officer Poirot has become a detective – yet still very youthful and slim, compared to the ‘well-fed’ TV adaptation. However, unlike the dreadful ferret-faced movie and terrible John Malkovich mini-series, I warmed to the younger Poirot within the game as he shares the same personality as the cult classic TV enactment. I was a little sceptical of The First Cases (how I’ll refer to it from now on) at first, I’m a massive fan of the ITV series and in my eyes, nobody can replace the look and sound of David Suchet. The publisher, once again, is Microïds – a studio that needs no introduction to fans of point-and-click, adventure, mystery, and immersive games. As such, there are a few similarities between the two games, combining a story that feels like it’s been written by the late Agatha Christie with the same logical and creative crime boards we saw in their previous game. This new and original story sees the famous Belgium detective solve a theft, blackmail, and murder mystery in a very immersive and interactive manner.Īgatha Christie – Hercule Poirot: The First Cases was developed by Blazing Griffin, the team behind the initiative Murder Mystery Machine which I reviewed last month. Just like busses, you wait a long time for a detective’s origin story and then two turn up at the same time! Eli and his gang try to talk the other hunters to stop cutting down the forest because it is also destroying the other native slugs habitat, they agree that cutting it down is a bad idea and decide to simply smoke the Enigmo out with Flaringos. As they arrive they find out that they aren't the only ones hunting for the Enigmo, minus one couple waiting to simply buy it. On a very slow and painful day (thanks to Pronto's home cooking) Trixie talks the gang into a slug hunt for the rare and near-extinct Enigmo slug. As Doc tries to clean the Dark Water, he begins to lose energy just at that moment Pronto arrives. After beating troublesome duo, Trixie informs the boys that the slugs are running from Dark Water that is seeping out from the cavern's monument so Eli asks Doc if he can handle that much to purify to which he replies with a serious and pumped look. Eli and Kord face off against Locke and Lode, while Pronto hunts down the Fandangos and Trixie looks for the source of the slugs fear which is in the bullseye. Just as the clan is ready to attack Burpy starts chirping frantically and the Shadow clan lets them pass, leaving Eli to wonder what did Burpy say and why did they listen to only him? After finally reaching the cavern and introduce the Fandangos to their new home, the slugs run away from something and before they could figure it out Locke and Lode make a smashing entrance. Locke and Lode follow and cause a cave in that results in the gang traveling through Shadow clan territory, which leads to a chase deeper into their territory (thanks to Pronto) and a face off between one of the clan and Eli trying to reason with it. While the gang heads to the cavern Eli learns that slug energy powers many, if not all, of Slugterra's caverns. Your CNN account Log in to your CNN account “We would never compromise the experience of the car or the looks of the car just purely for range,” he said. That, Müller-Ötvös insists, will be enough. The 557 horsepower car will be able to go from zero to 60 miles an hour in about 4.4 seconds and will be able drive about 260 miles before needing to recharge. Its cars are expected to be, quite literally, massive. But, for Rolls-Royce, weight has never been a major issue. Usually automakers try to conserve weight when making electric cars to make up for all the mass the batteries themselves add. The Spectre’s total weight of 6,659 pounds - about 600 pounds more than a Cullinan SUV - includes more than 1,500 pound of sound-deadening insulation to ensure the ideal Rolls-Royce level of quiet. There will be screens, but their use will be more understated, he said. While many electric cars have extremely large touch screens and rely on them for many internal controls, the Spectre will rely more on physical controls, Müller-Ötvös said. Last year, the brand unveiled a convertible called the Boat Tail, of which only three were built at an estimated price of $25 million each. The car’s overall tapered shape was influenced by yachts, according to Rolls-Royce, a theme similar to that of another recent Rolls-Royce that may be the most expensive car ever made. Four-wheel steering should help the big car feel more nimble in tight corners. It’s also about 2.5 inches longer than a Cadillac Escalade SUV, and slightly wider. (In four-door Rolls-Royce models, only the back doors open this way.) Because of its size and roominess, Roll-Royce calls the Spectre a “super coupé.” It’s about six inches longer and five inches wider than the last Rolls-Royce coupé, the Wraith, which went out of production earlier this year. In traditional Rolls-Royce fashion, the Spectre’s two doors are hinged in the back and open rearward. This follows the strategy of Rolls-Royce’s parent company, BMW, which also relies on flexible engineering that can be used to build both gasoline and electric cars. The Spectre shares its basic underlying structure with Rolls-Royce’s gas-powered models: the Phantom and Ghost sedans and the Cullinan SUV. The Silver Ghost, which first went into production in 1906, is regarded as the car that established Rolls-Royce’s reputation as a pinnacle of automotive quality. The starlit ceiling effect that is an option on other Rolls-Royces is extended to the door liners in the Spectre. “So, we want to make sure that this car is really right and spot on and is a proper, perfect Rolls Royce.” The “Spectre is for us, as important as Silver Ghost might have been many, many years ago and it is the entry into a new era for the brand going full electric by 2030,” Rolls-Royce chief executive Torsten Müller-Ötvös said in an interview with CNN Business. That’s fairly sleek, but just in the ballpark among modern electric cars.Įven an electric Rolls-Royce could hardly go without the grille, though, since the upright, tombstone-shaped slab of metal slats is among the most genuinely iconic in the industry. Still, the Spectre is the most aerodynamic Rolls-Royce yet, according to the company, which claims the car has a drag coefficient of 0.25. From Rolls-RoyceĪlso, despite not needing nearly as much air as Rolls-Royce’s V12-powered cars, the Spectre will have the widest grille ever seen on a Rolls-Royce model. Rolls-Royce calls the Spectre a "Super Coupé" because of its large size. |
